Think in routes, not rooms
A bedroom on the first floor does not solve daily access if the bathroom, laundry, food, medication, or exit route still requires stairs. Trace every essential task and its nighttime path.
Protect flexibility
Use reversible furniture layouts first, preserve privacy and daylight, plan caregiver approach space, and rough-in supports or plumbing during other construction. A room may shift between office, guest room, bedroom, and care space.
Test the route at full scale
Use tape or cardboard to mock up bed clearances, turns, door swings, toilet approach, shower entry, and storage reach. Test with the actual mobility device whenever possible.
Rules, programs, and conditions change. Confirm requirements with the official source, local building department, and qualified professionals.
